New car tyres ‘2 years old’

Rubber deteriorates on a wheel and cars straight off the assembly line are often left outside in storage parks before being sold on.

There are 1,000 injuries and 43 deaths a year caused by defective tyres on Britain’s roads. Older tyres, even within legal tread limits, need an extra 23 per cent stopping distance, says magazine Auto Express.

It wants sell-by dates on tyres in the UK.

A spot-check by the magazine on cars arriving at a service station on the M1 found some new cars had tyres already two years old.
