Suicidal bridge jumper pushed by angry passer-by

A FURIOUS passer-by pushed a man threatening to commit suicide off a bridge, after he held up traffic for five hours.

Retired soldier Lian Jiansheng, 66, broke through a police cordon, climbed up the bridge to Chen Fuchao and reached out to shake his hand before shoving him off.

Mr Fuchao, who was £200,000 in debt over a failed building project, plunged eight metres from the Haizhu bridge in Guangzhou onto an emergency air cushion.

Defending his action, which was greeted with gasps and applause from onlookers, Mr Jiansheng told the China Daily newspaper: "I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish.

"Their action violates a lot of public interests.

"They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

The would-be jumper was hospitalised with wrist and back injuries while Mr Jiansheng was detained by police.
