INVESTIGATION: Bill Cash is having expences probed

Friday May 29,2009

By Gareth Bebb

SENIOR Conservative MP Bill Cash last night faced pressure over allegations he claimed more than £15,000 in taxpayer-funded expenses to pay rental fees to his daughter.

Mr Cash is said to have paid his daughter, Laetitia, £1,200-a-month rent to live in her flat in Notting Hill, London, despite owning a home closer to Westminster in Pimlico.

He is said to have named her flat as his “second home’’ for expenses in 2004 and 2005.

Miss Cash, 35, a former debutante-of-the-year, is said to be a potential Tory MP on David Cameron’s “A list’’ of candidates.

She reportedly sold her flat for a £48,000 profit less than 18 months after buying it and shortly after her father stopped claiming rent for it.

Arch euro-sceptic Mr Cash insisted it was a simple tenancy that met the rules of the time and was approved by the Fees Office. He had never claimed for his much larger country home near his Staffordshire constituency.

In 2006 the rules changed to ban MPs from renting properties from close relatives.

Mr Cash insisted last night he had claimed nothing in respect of his Pimlico flat, from which he had also not received any rental income.

He said the arrangement left taxpayers “no worse off than if I had been renting anywhere else”.
