BA’s zero pay plan

BRITISH Airways staff are being asked to work for four weeks without pay as the company desperately tries to cut costs.

BA boss Willie Walsh has written to the airline’s 40,000 staff pleading for workers to follow his lead and work for nothing. Last week Mr Walsh announced he would take no salary for the month of July – forgoing £61,000.

A letter sent to staff says: “The new unpaid work option means people can contribute to the cash-saving effort by coming to work while effectively volunteering for a small cut in base pay.”

The loss of earnings will be spread over up to six months. In May the beleaguered airline posted a loss of £401million.
