Phillip Cadwallader, 43, had lit a candle in memory of his late mother Phyllis at Blackburn Cathedral, Lancashire, when staff asked him to leave and called the police. They made a search of his rucksack.

Support worker Phillip said: “I am angry and disgusted. It was a harsh judgment of me just because I am going bald.”

Canon Chris Chivers yesterday apologised and said staff had feared he was about to disrupt a Radio 4 broadcast on concentration camp victim Anne Frank. An earlier show had been sabotaged.
