PARLIAMENT: MPs expenses scandal continues to hang-over politics

Sunday June 21,2009

By Gareth Bebb

WELSH Tory MP David Davies is under fire after paying £1,933 in public funds to his father’s haulage firm for stamps, leaflets and a publicity stand.

The former lorry driver claimed the money from Parliamentary allowances to pay a bill from his father’s company, Burrow Heath Ltd, in 2007.

Mr Davies, a serving special constable who  worked for Burrow Heath before winning a seat in the Welsh Assembly in 1999, said his father had done him a “favour” by doing the work “at cost”.

He said: “There were a lot of agricultural shows and I had to get a lot of leaflets.

“There was no money made by Burrow Heath. ” Parliamentary Green Book rules say MPs “must ensure that claims do not give rise to, or give the appearance of giving rise to, an improper personal financial benefit."
