Humphrie's Scorns Gatsby Film
AS DIRECTOR Baz Luhrman prepares for a movie adaption of The Great Gatsby, Barry Humphries is hoping he can pour cold water on the plan.
The man behind Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge is aiming to pull off a successful version of F Scott Fitzgerald’s jazz-age classic – something that many others have failed to achieve.
“I hear my extravagant countryman Baz Luhrman is planning to make another Great Gatsby movie,” sighs Dame Edna star Barry, 75, in The Spectator.
“If he does it will be number six and none of them have been any good.
“In my copy of the book Fitzgerald has written to someone, ‘You might have seen the movie but I think the book stands by itself’. I think I might show this to Baz.”
