The 72-year-old ordered an old banger to be delivered to his Butch Cassidy co-star’s house.

But it was Paul, who died from cancer last year, who had the last laugh.

“Paul drove me crazy talking about racing all the time,” explains Robert. “So I went to a junkyard and said, ‘Do you have a destroyed sports car and can you wrap it up and leave it at Paul Newman’s house?’ ”

However Paul had it crushed and returned to sender. It remained in Robert’s garden as a sculpture. “It was awful,” he recalls.
