Following the exits of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez and with Karim Benzema’s agent saying the Lyon striker wants to stay in France for another year, Sir Alex Ferguson was keen to keep the goalkeeper who he sees as Edwin van der Sar’s successor at Old Trafford.

And he has tied up Foster on a four-year deal that will raise the 25-year-old’s salary from £25,000-a-week to £50,000. Improved deals for Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck are expected to follow.

Foster, with the World Cup in South Africa next summer a major target, will be hoping to make his mark in pre-season and be installed as United’s No 1 in August.

Ferguson’s hopes of signing Benzema appeared to take a knock yesterday when the striker’s agent, Karim Djaziri, said: “He wants to stay in France for another year so that he can prepare for the World Cup finals and I think Sir Alex knows this.”
