The little-known Australian actress has teamed up with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Matt Lucas in the 3D adaptation of the famous children’s book.

And the role seems to suit her perfectly as she poses on a giant cup and saucer in Alice’s signature blue dress with her tumbling blonde curls.

Director Burton said, despite many casting calls and auditions, Miss Wasikowska was perfect for the role.

He said: 'We met a lot of people, but she just had that certain kind of emotional toughness, standing her ground in a way that makes her kind of an older person with a younger person’s mentality.”

The 19-year-old is much older than Lewis Carroll’s original Alice, who was “seven and a half exactly”.

The story will follow a 17-year-old Alice as she grows bored of a Victorian garden party and chases a white rabbit (to be played by Michael Sheen) down a rabbit hole.

She finds herself back in Wonderland, which she visited ten years previously but does not remember.

The film will be distanced from the first Disney animation adaptation and “Burton-ized”, according to producer Richard Zanuck.

But despite Burton’s love of taking things to ‘the dark side’ – the Red Queen will have a moat full of people’s heads - Zanuck says children will revel in it.

He said: "The book itself is pretty dark. This is for little people and people who read it when they were little 50 years ago."

Depp, who is a fan of playing eerie characters, will take on the role of the Mad Hatter with his wild orange hair, yellow eyes and pasty white skin.

Zanuck describes the Mad Hatter as “off his rocker”.

Burton’s long-term girlfriend Bonham Carter will play the evil Red Queen – pictured looking striking with her oversized head, red hair and heart lipstick.

Oscar-nominated Hathaway paints a picture of innocence with her flowing white hair and crimson lips as the White Queen.

And Little Britain star Lucas plays twins Tweedledee and Tweedledum, known for their rhymes and riddles.

Although filming has finished, most of the characters will now be digitally altered during post-production.
