TV MIDGE FORECAST IS A FIRST

INVASION: The blood-sucking midge is like the hungry mosquito

Thursday June 25,2009

By Brendan Abbott

TV viewers are to get the first ever forecast of Scotland’s annual plague of pesky midges.

STV plans to broadcast a 30-second snapshot of the pest’s progress every Thursday evening.

The information will be compiled by expert Dr Alison Blackwell who has been studying the creatures for 17 years.

She runs Advanced Pest Solutions, which is based in Edinburgh University and researches midge activity.

The 10.35pm forecast will allow people to plan their outside activities by providing an indication of predicted midge levels.

Dr Blackwell said: “If you live in an area with midges, you can’t completely avoid them, but with the forecast you can try and plan your activities so that you minimise the risk of getting bitten and are prepared with suitable clothing and a good repellent.

“For tourists, the forecast can help them decide where and when to go and when indoor attractions might be a better choice than outside.”

The online version of the Midge Forecast has been operating for a number of years and has proved to be highly popular and as successful as the pollen forecast.

The television version will be delivered by STV weatherman Sean Batty who said: “More people are expected to holiday in Scotland this year because of the credit crunch, and our midge forecast will allow people to be more alert.”
