Nice one Maicon

BIG-SPENDING Manchester City want Inter Milan right-back Maicon - and are willing to offer Elano and £10million in cash.

CITY TARGET Maicon CITY TARGET: Maicon

Having strengthened his midfield by signing Gareth Barry and his attack with Roque Santa Cruz, plus the imminent signing of Carlos Tevez, boss Mark Hughes now wants to improve his defence.

And the 27-year-old Maicon, above, who had a superb season as Inter clinched a third Serie A title on the trot, is his top target, although he faces competition from Real Madrid and Chelsea if Inter decide to sell.

Agent Antonio Caliendo said: “Maicon is the best right-back in the world. I can rule out that Manchester United are interested but City have made an approach.”

Midfielder Elano, who cost City £8m two years ago, has stated his desire to join Inter and fallen further down City’s midfield pecking order after Barry’s arrival.

Meanwhile, Hughes will turn his sights on West Ham’s England international Matthew Upson if Everton block his attempts to buy Joleon Lescott.

Hughes was rebuffed when he first tried to sign Upson in January but the Hammers might reconsider if City offer £15m plus striker Valeri Bojinov. And Upson will no doubt see City as a better bet to challenge the ‘Big Four’.
