Sir Chris and fiancée Sarra Kemp celebrate his award

Saturday June 27,2009

By Emily Fox

IT has taken more than a decade, but cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy has finally gained a degree from Scotland’s oldest university.

The triple gold-medal winner studied maths and physics at St Andrews in the Nineties, but left to complete his studies at Edinburgh University.

Yesterday the university made him an honorary doctor of science in recognition of his achievements in the sporting world.

Sir Chris urged a new generation of graduates to follow their “crazy dreams” as he received the honorary degree.

The 33-year-old, who attended the ceremony with fiancée Sarra Kemp, told students: “No matter how crazy the dream is, don’t let people put you down or make you think it’s not possible, because it is.

“If you work hard enough, anything is.”

Professor Peter McKiernan, of the university’s school of management, said Sir Chris had grown from BMX racer to “the most successful track cyclist the world has ever seen”.

Sir Chris gained a BSc honours in sports science at Edinburgh University in 1999.
