MURRAY: Thriller

Wednesday July 1,2009

By Bob McKenzie

ANDY MURRAY says more experience, greater stamina and belief that he can win Wimbledon will prevent a re-run today of a year ago when a big match to get to the quarter-finals left him drained.

“If you feel you can win a competition, it’s not like you’re going to be satisfied with a quarter-final,” he said of his mid-afternoon collision against former world No1 Juan Carlos Ferrero on Centre Court.

“I have the chance to go further than I did last year and to win the tournament, and that’s my goal and the change in mentality.”

Twelve months ago, as on Monday night, British No1 Murray had a massive struggle through the fourth round.

In exactly the same time as it took to beat Stanislas Wawrinka this week, three hours and 57 minutes, Murray beat Richard Gasquet in another stunning match.

That pitted him against Rafael Nadal, but the effort was too much and Murray was wiped out in three disappointing sets.

But against another Spaniard, Ferrero, Murray feels up to the job. “When I played the match against Gasquet that was the first time I had played a match like that at Wimbledon,” said Murray.

“I had to come back a couple of days later and I just felt emotionally flat.

“I feel fine just now. I know how to recover better than I did before. I have the right guys around me, and they know how my body works, so we’ll do the right things to get me ready.

"Last year I did think that I could win the tournament, but it’s just that until you get past the quarter-final stage, or get to the final of a Slam, you don’t know what that feels like.

“Then you come up against someone like Nadal, who has done it over and over again, their mentality is going to be better than yours because it’s normal for them to get into the latter stages of tournaments.

"It wasn’t until after last year’s Wimbledon that I was able to do that on a consistent basis.

“My body just feels stronger. I recover better from long matches.”

Ferrero, 29, easily beaten by Murray just 19 days ago on grass in the semi-final of the Aegon Championship at Queen’s, said: “Andy is a great talent. He likes to be in the difficult moments.

“He is young as well and has loads of time to get to No1.”
