Dogs left to die in hot cars
FOUR dogs have died after being left in the heat in cars in the Highlands, animal welfare officers said yesterday.
The Scottish SPCA said two of the animals were found in the same vehicle in Inverness.
They also got reports of the death of another dog in a separate incident in the city, and another in Tain.
The charity said the sun’s heat was intensified through glass and could cause a dog to effectively boil alive.
An individual has been reported to the procurator fiscal over the Tain incident.
Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: “Many people don’t realise just how dangerous an act this is and we are getting reports of it happening all over the country.
“Last July two Shar Pei dogs were left in the back of a car while their owner went to the cinema.
“It was clear when we arrived that the animals were in extreme distress. Luckily they survived – and the owner was fined £400.”
Mr Flynn added: “Our advice is to leave your dog at home.”
