Helicopter crash, yet passengers escaped unscathed /pic posed by model

Thursday July 2,2009

By Emily Fox

A PILOT and his passenger walked away almost unscathed when their microlight aircraft crashed into a front garden.

The aircraft hit phone lines a mile after taking off and crash-landed just yards from the busy M60 motorway.

The pilot had declared an emergency shortly after take-off, telling air traffic controllers his engine had failed.

The £55,000 two-seater CTSW plane came down in Manchester shortly after lunchtime on Tuesday.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived to find the pilot and passenger – both in their 20s – conscious, with one helping to drag the other away from the wreckage. They had only minor injuries.

Homeowner Jimmy Robinson, 69, was out at the time. His car and a garden wall were damaged.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is probing the incident.
