BETTER THAN EXPECTED FOR FORD

Car giant Ford revealed its June US sales fell 11 per cent, a better-than-expected performance and raising hopes that the American economy was stabilising.

Ford shares rose 0.6 per cent and those of rival General Motors lifted 0.3 per cent.

At mid-session, the Dow Jones was up 76.5 points to 8523.5.
