Bolder steps, says Turner Friday July 3,2009 By Alison LittlePEOPLE should work until they are 70 before collecting a state pension, a Government adviser suggested yesterday.
Lord Turner, who chaired the Pensions Commission and now heads the Financial Services Authority City watchdog, first proposed raising state retirement age four years ago. Then he suggested it should be raised to 69 by 2050 to fund a higher basic state pension. Yesterday, however, Lord Turner said he should have suggested bolder steps to solve the national pension crisis. EXPRESS RETIREMENT: THE LATEST NEWS & ADVICE FOR SILVER SURFERS “If I was redoing my report I would be more radical, arguing for an even faster increase in the state pension age to make affordable an even bigger increase than we suggested in the indexation of the state pension, so it gets people out of poverty without means-testing,” he said. “My gut feel is that if I was to do it again, I would probably say that we should have been more radical.’’ He also urged changes to the final salary pensions enjoyed by many public sector workers from the age of 60, basing payments on career average pay with variable retirement ages. A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman insisted the Government’s reforms would “radically and fundamentally change the pensions landscape” and reforms would ensure public sector pensions were affordable. It has pledged to raise the state pension age in stages to 68 by 2046.

This is all very well but if you're made redundant after the age of 45-50yrs the odds on obtaining a further full time salaried position are rather less than winning the big one on the lottery. Any amount of experience and qualifications will prove to be of less value than the Mc Donalds Happy meal that you can no longer afford once the redundancy money runs out. Unless, of course, you were a banker or a politician.

born with a silver spoon never had to do real work,kept in the high life by the middle and working classes, this country needs advive from silver tounged cads like him as much as they need Gordon Brown and his second rate posse.

It seems to me that this work to 70 routine is an admission that the pension Ponzi scheme is now finally on its last legs. There is no money for it ! But there is money for everything our beloved leaders say there is. £40 million a day for the EU and money for Iraq/afgahn wars,etc etc etc. Time to rid ourselves of this oppression by LibLabCon ruling elites who now demonstrate contempt for the taxpayer at every turn. If you start work at 16 you will be working 54 years before getting the state pension assuming you survive until then.

These people who have gilt edged state pensions, provided by the long suffering tax payers would have the rest of us, the wealth creators, work until we die at work. That way, they won't have to pay us anything for which we have contributed, in most cases, all our lives. Why not just make retirement age 10 and have done with it? That should make re we pay for the ne'er do wells and scroungers a they want us to do

In todays world im a RACIST,ive nothing against the colour of peoples skin,im not against peoples choice of religion,im not against helping people of different nations provided they stay in their own country and build the country, what i am against is millions coming to this country and getting free hand outs,no wonder they want us to work longer.I am sick to death of this continual flow of IMMEGRANTS,after all they DONT bring any benefits to BRITAIN,so when will our MP,s listen to its people,NEVER i guess,these London gays and CHEATS do something for BRITISH PEOPLE,APART FROM MAKING US WORK TO PROVIDE FOR OTHERS
