FREE TO KILL: Sonnex should have been behind bars

Tuesday July 7,2009

EVIL Dano Sonnex should have been in jail when he stabbed two French students to death in an “orgy of blood-letting”.

But Sonnex, 23, was allowed to roam the streets after blunders by the probation service and police.

He was freed in February last year after a long sentence. Two months later, he was charged with handling stolen goods and should have been returned to prison within 24 hours.

But a probation officer took six weeks to complete vital paperwork and police took a further 16 days before trying to find him. Officers went to his home in Deptford, south London, on June 29 – the day he murdered French research students Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez.

The 23-year-olds were tortured for their PIN numbers before being butchered by Sonnex and an accomplice at Mr Bonomo’s flat.

In more than three hours of “unimaginable evil”, Mr Bonomo was stabbed 194 times and Mr Ferez 50 times. The case cost London probation chief David Scott his £100,000-a-year job. But many believe he was made the scapegoat for an under-funded system.
