IMMIGRATION? NOT A WORRY FOR HOME SECRETARY

NO WORRIES: Alan Johnson does not think population figures will rise about 70million

Wednesday July 15,2009

By Macer Hall

HOME Secretary Alan Johnson blew apart the Government’s border control policy last night by admitting that Britain’s population could soar above 70million.

He said: “I do not lie awake at night worrying about a population of 70million.” Mr Johnson, tipped as a possible successor to Gordon Brown, also insisted he was “happy” living in a multi-cultural society and called for more foreign workers to come to Britain.

Sir Andrew Green, chairman of thinktank Migrationwatch, said: “The minister should be having nightmares about the impact on our schools, hospitals, environment and quality of life of another 10million people. Instead he has just given up.” Mr Johnson’s comments to the home affairs select committee were a seismic shift in Labour’s immigration policy and a humiliating blow to immigration minister Phil Woolas, who has promised to limit the population to below 70million.
