NOW SWINE FLU PANIC SWEEPS BRITAIN

QUESTIONS: The public want answers as helplines are bombarded and 'keep calm' pleas are ignored

Wednesday July 15,2009

By Jo Willey

SWINE flu panic is sweeping Britain, with emergency phone lines overwhelmed and tens of thousands of people desperately stockpiling treatments.

It is thought the sudden alarm has been sparked by the deaths of two otherwise healthy people from the deadly H1N1 bug.

The National Health Service has 33million doses of anti-viral drugs like Tamiflu – enough for over half of the population – but people fear they will not get to those who need them.

However, experts remain convinced that the virus is no more contagious or dangerous than seasonal flu.

Dr Laurence Buckman, chairman of the British Medical Association’s general practitioners committee, said: “It is very important that members of the public do not panic and follow advice if they are infected. The vast majority will recover quickly by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen and drinking plenty of fluids.”

As private health firms admit they are being inundated with calls from people wanting to buy Tamiflu, latest figures have revealed a huge surge in calls to NHS Direct.

On Monday, nurses at the advice service spoke to more than 9,060 people about swine flu – the most in a single day since the disease hit the UK in April, taking the number of calls to 198,000.

Over half the callers were given advice on looking after themselves at home, 10 per cent were given health information and 32 per cent were referred to their family doctors for further assessment. More than 1.4million people haveused the online cold and flu symptom checker run by the service. The huge surge came at the weekend with 6,691 calls answered on Sunday and 7,213 on Saturday.

This compares with the last week of May and first week in June when fewer than 1,000 answered calls a day were about swine flu.

Paula Higson, chief operating officer for NHS Direct, said: “We are dealing with a significantly increased number of calls and longer length calls as we are assessing more than one person per call.

“We are giving priority to urgent calls so that people most in need are assessed as quickly as possible and urgent calls are being dealt with in less than 20 minutes.

“If a call back is required for a non-urgent call we will tell callers how long they have to wait.

“We are encouraging people to use other channels where possible to help take pressure off NHS Direct and GP surgeries.”

Despite warnings that the service was being overwhelmed, the Department of Health insisted people were following the correct advice by contacting NHS Direct.

A spokesman said: “This virus is still generally mild in the vast majority of people. However, it can be more severe in some cases and as with all flu-like viruses, some people are at higher risk than others.”

One company selling Tamiflu told the Daily Express it was selling 4,000 doses of the drug every working day and calls to its dedicated care line had soared in the past few days from three a day to about 45.

Healthcare Connections said that on May 1 alone it sold 55,000 doses, with many people fearing they might not be able to get the drug if and when they needed it.

Chief executive Alison Brown said: “We have seen an unprecedented level of interest from consumers over the past few weeks and have even set up a dedicated care line number for customers who want to talk to a member of our team.

“People are looking to protect themselves and their families and being able to get hold of the medication from us means that they can have peace of mind.”

One online private medical health clinic saw an increase in inquiries following the initial outbreak but a surge again in the past two days.

Manager Jo Kirby said they had been forced to limit its stock to a maximum of three packs per person.

She added: “We usually do not prescribe more than a couple of courses per week but in the last months there has been a large increase in requests for information and treatment. There are a lot of worried people out there.”

In April the Government ordered manufacturers to stop private sales of Tamiflu to conserve supplies amid fears of internet profiteering.

Nearly 10,000 Britons have been confirmed with swine flu but hundreds of thousands more are thought to have the virus.

Health Secretary Andy Burnham yesterday called for “perspective” following the death of six-year-old Chloe Buckley from West Drayton, Middlesex, and a patient in Basildon, Essex, who died from swine flu without underlying health problems. Their deaths have taken the UK death toll to 16.

Michael Day, 64, a Bedfordshire doctor whose death last week was linked to swine flu, was yesterday found to have died from natural causes.

Mr Burnham said: “People need to keep it in perspective. Lots of children have already had swine flu and have made a full recovery. We have to keep it in perspective.

“We have made very good plans and Britain is at the front of the queue in the world for vaccine. We could not be in a better position.

“As soon as stocks are made, the very first vaccines will come to this country. We expect to get the first next month.”

LIVING IN FEAR.

16.07.09, 1:18pm

This world is truly becoming Orwellian.
The elite want everyone to live in fear and with their mass media they are doing a good job of it.
Don't get sucked in by their hype.

NOW SWINE FLU PANIC SWEEPS BRITAIN

15.07.09, 3:13pm

That might not be a woman panicking over swine flu. It might be that she has a large nose and can't afford cosmetic surgery. Perhaps the headline should be 'Price of beauty treatment soars to record levels.'
On the subject of pandemics it's no use panicking. Through the ages diseases have plagued mankind, (pun intended), and wiped out millions of people. Only a godless athiest society 'fears the reaper'. That's what faith is for, to console and support in tough times. If you think faith is pointless think about the 'placebo' and now the 'nocebo' effects. Not only can people be made well by believing they have been given the cure, but it now seems people can be made ill by believing they have the disease. So the power of the human mind to believe can have physical consequences. Have a little faith and if it's in God you trust then 'thy will be done' makes the outcome, whatever it is, easier to bear.

SWINE FLU PANIC

15.07.09, 2:46pm

here is supposedly only one cure: Ionic silver. However the panic is fearmongering, and is irresponsible. Scaremongering creates stress, and stress mutates what is basically a harmless avian flu virus into something more deadly.

A reporter named Jane Burgermeister is actually bringing charges against the criminals behind the outbreak. Listen here:
