GIBSON SPEAKS OUT OVER 'DISTURBING' MUSIC INDUSTRY

Story Image

Tuesday July 21,2009

Former teen star DEBBIE GIBSON has warned young singers to beware of sleazy older men inviting them to music industry parties in a bid to "corrupt" them.

The Foolish Beat hitmaker, now 38, shot to fame at the age of 16 in the mid-1980s and admits she was "disturbed" by creepy older male fans who were obsessed with her clean-cut schoolgirl image.

She tells Fox News, "It is very disheartening that there are so many older men that prey on young performers. The younger you are, the more innocent you are, the more wholesome your image is, the weirder the fans become in terms of older men wanting to corrupt little girls. Even the way the paparazzi stalk the younger artists is very different from following around adults - I find that very disturbing."

Gibson insists she also had to contend with sleazy music bosses who attempted to push her into a world of showbiz parties and drinking when she was still a child - and her protective parents fought hard to shelter her.

She adds, "There would be older male record executives trying to take me to parties by myself but my mom would always be like 'She's a sixteen year old girl, she's not going into an atmosphere with over 21-year-olds and alcohol!' I hadn't had enough life experience for those situations.

"You grow up thinking 'Everyone loves me', but everyone who you are paying loves you. I was protected enough so that my childhood could be preserved as much as it could be in the circumstance.?
