DREAM DEBUT FOR THE TIGERS’ NEW AMERICAN IDOL ALTIDORE

DEADLOCK BREAKER: Hull goal hero Ghilas

Sunday August 23,2009

By Richard Jolly

JOZY ALTIDORE was given a standing ovation when he made his Hull debut.

Within a matter of seconds, the cheers for the Tigers’ new American idol were even louder.

Talk about an instant impact. The teenager came off the bench, into the attack to set up a goal with his first touch.

He was introduced after an hour and Hull were a goal up a minute later.

Born in New Jersey and borrowed from Villarreal, he now has a big fan club in East Yorkshire.

When Seyi Olofinjana headed on, Altidore improvised an overhead kick into the path of Kamel Ghilas and the Algerian forward rifled home his first Hull goal.

With two summer signings combining and a substitution succeeding so quickly, it was a moment to savour for Phil Brown.

There should have been another. Geovanni sent Altidore clear only for the USA international to miss a glorious chance to open his Hull account. Then Ghilas struck the bar.

But before Altidore’s arrival, Hull were lucky they weren’t trailing.

First Fabrice Muamba’s pass sent Johan Elmander clear. The Swede beat Hull’s offside trap but curled his shot just wide.

Apart from that, Bolton threatened most at set-pieces. Matt Taylor almost scored with a low, deflected free-kick that Boaz Myhill parried.

And when Sean Davis chipped in a free-kick, Kevin Davies tamely volleyed wide.
