Danger of salty bread
SOME brands of sliced bread contain twice as much unhealthy salt as cheaper, supermarket own-label loaves, new research shows.
Salt levels range from just 0.7g per 100g to more than double that, the Food Standards Agency found.
It names bread as the number one source of salt in the UK diet – and warns that consumers wrongly think crisps and snacks are the worst offenders.
The FSA, which launches a salt reduction campaign today, urges shoppers to pay closer attention to the salt levels in different brands of the same type of food.
The recommended salt intake is 6g per day.
