Distraught Kate Woolley partner of Guardsman Jamie Janes of 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards

Saturday October 10,2009

By John Ingham

THE grief-stricken mother of a young soldier killed in Afghanistan collapsed and wailed “I want my baby back” as his body was flown home yesterday.

His girlfriend, Kate Woolley, 24, wept openly as she threw flowers on his hearse.

Guardsman Jamie Janes, 20, of 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards, was killed by an explosion while on foot patrol on Monday.

His body was flown to RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire yesterday with that of Acting Corporal Marcin Wojtak, 24, of 34 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment, who was killed on patrol last week.

As their cortege drove through the rain in nearby Wootton Bassett, Guardsman Janes’ mother and girlfriend pressed their faces to the window of the hearse and sobbed audibly during the minute’s silence.

Mrs Janes cried: “I just want my baby back. I want to go with my son.”

Guardsman Janes, of Brighton, died trying to clear a way through an area of homemade bombs.
