Welcome to Carnasty

IT MIGHT be a far cry from the glitz and glamour of Rodeo Drive, but this shopping street will become the centre of attention for some of the world’s richest women this week.

Millionaire golfing wives, including, hopefully, Elin Woods and Amy Mickelson, will start arriving in Carnoustie, Angus, tomorrow as their superstar husbands prepare for this year’s Open Championship.

But the ladies – who are just as renowned for their spending sprees as their footballing counterparts – will struggle to fulfil their penchant for designer stores and fine dining.

Indeed, with its tanning salons, six takeaways, a Nickel ‘n’ Dime shop and a café selling “scampi, chips and peas”, Carnoustie’s Main Street is no Beverly Hills. Nevertheless, shop owners hope to be visited by the millionaire spouses.

Aileen Craig, whose shop sells ladies’ fashions and accessories, said the gold WAGs might be interested in her stock – as long as they find Marks & Spencer’s range too racy.

She said: “We have a wide range of clothes for ladies over 30, with what I would describe as average high street prices.

“Wives and girlfriends usually come in and spend their guy’s money, and we’ll be able to cater for the golfing WAGs here.”

Meanwhile, the Scotch Corner Café has announced it will open 24 hours a day during the Open.

Owner Debbie Fairweather, 39, said: “We get all sorts of people in here and we think we can cater for everyone – WAGs included.

“I think they would enjoy it here. They would get a real Scottish café dining experience.”
