IT’S UNPATRIOTIC NOT TO BACK PRESIDENT BLAIR, SAYS BROWN

BROWN: Blair is an "excellent person"

Friday October 30,2009

By Gabriel Milland

GORDON BROWN threw his full weight behind Tony Blair’s bid to become the new president of Europe last night – and claimed it was unpatriotic not to back him.

The Prime Minister said he could not understand why anyone would not want Mr Blair to land the job.

Despite the tense relationship between the two men, Mr Brown piled praise on his predecessor, describing him as an “excellent candidate and an excellent person”.

Mr Brown also claimed that British people would be “pleased” if the position went to someone from the UK.

Speaking at a European Union summit in Brussels, he said: “There is a general view that Tony Blair is a good candidate and would be an excellent president.

“People would be pleased if a British person became president. I think most people would prefer a British person taking this job rather than citizens of other countries.”

But his words flew in the face of a new poll released last night.

The public opinion website Politics-Home showed 29 per of voters support him getting the job with 57 per cent preferring it went to a foreigner.

And there were fresh signs yesterday of shrinking support outside Britain for Mr Blair.

Spain, one of the few remaining left-wing governments in Europe, appeared to be on the brink of ending support.

Another backer, Ireland, also looked shaky as its former premier John Bruton threw his hat into the ring.

German Premier Angela Merkel – the likely kingmaker – has let it be known she thinks Mr Blair is too “flash” for the role.

Smaller countries worry that Mr Blair would water down their influence – as well as criticising his link to the Iraq war.

The deputy prime minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn said: “There is a link and there will remain a link for the coming generation between Iraq, Bush, and Tony Blair.

“Sometimes in politics you have to show that you can bring things together and not divide them. There are better candidates than Tony Blair, he has a lot of merits but on this point it’s a little bit complex.”

Fears grew yesterday when Mr Blair let it be known he would only be interested if it was a “big job” and not simply chairing meetings.

There also was no sign of the Conservatives easing their opposition.

Tory sources have warned Europe will face a “five-year war” with Britain if he is chosen by the 27 European heads of government.

A shadow cabinet minister said: “The message is clear – you can have President Blair and five years of internecine warfare with Britain over Europe; or you can have another president and a good working relationship.” Shadow foreign secretary William Hague said that the current debate about Mr Blair and the presidency showed British voters should have been given a say on the Lisbon Treaty establishing the president job.

He said: “If the job is that important, that is a major constitutional change and we should have had the referendum that we’ve all been arguing about for the last few years.”

Even Mr Blair’s former colleagues are showing reservations about him getting the plum £275,000 role.

Former Home Secretary Charles Clarke became the most senior Labour figure to speak out against Mr Blair. He said there could be no hope of a fresh start under him.

Instead of seeking the presidency, Mr Clarke said the Government should try to get a Briton installed as the EU foreign policy chief.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband would be an option, he said. But Mr Brown ruled that out yesterday.

Both jobs will be decided after the Lisbon Treaty is finally ratified, most likely in the middle of next month.

Meanwhile, the main business of the summit was on measures to help poor countries deal with global warming.

A Downing Street source said Britain was likely to contribute around £1 billion a year by 2020 to help them with the effects of climate change.

The total bill to European taxpayers is likely to be at least £27billion a year out of a total bill of around £90billion.

YOU WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT PATRIOISM WAS IF IT BIT YOU ON YOUR BUM

30.10.09, 11:59pm

If Britain's enemies could have created a more destructive weapon against our country, then at least we would have known who or what that evil was. But now we have this Brown Clown - the genius that saved The World from the Devilish Downturn - with the obvious exception of Britain, that is - telling us what? That it's ' unpatriotic NOT to back Blair'. What is this part of his fall-back option.....kiss Blair's ****......and 'look after me when I'm OLD and useless'....too late Brown.....you already are. Do you ever listen to yourself? You're a complete idiot!

UNPATRIOTIC?

30.10.09, 10:10pm

I always knew that Brown was a bit short in the brain Department... but to say it is 'unpatriotic' not to support Blair for EU President is rediculous, I would say that it would be 'unpatriotic' to support him, look what he did to this Country before jumping ship, what mess would he make in the EU?

THE MAJORITY DO NOT WANT BLAIR OR THE EU.

30.10.09, 3:18pm

What a brass neck this man has. The majority of people in the UK do not want to be in the EU. Blair sold British jobs to immigrants and to Eastern Europeans after he lied how many would come here from the new EU states. What does this man care about the ordinary working man making a fortune.? He and Cheerie are living on another planit. The majority of British people do not want Blair anywhere near them and he has helped take the Great out of Britain and the United out of the Kingdom. He is one of the culprits who have left the UK in the mess it is. What planit does Brown live on that he thinks he and Blair are patriots. Give us a vote on the EU treaty and the people will show you what we think of Europe.
