How three little bears got the jump on a salmon

PERCHED on the edge of a waterfall, a mother grizzly bear makes fishing for salmon look easy.

Fishing is a piece of cake for mummy bear until another adult appears Fishing is a piece of cake for mummy bear until another adult appears

You open your mouth and one obligingly jumps in.

Just the thing for her family of youngsters, seen with her on the right.

But wait!

A large male grizzly is sneaking up beside her, intent on snatching the cubs’ meal.

He didn’t know what hit him.

With one mighty swipe of an enormous paw she saw him off, dropping the salmon in the set-to.

Then one of the three cubs nipped in and made off with it.

These spectacular pictures, from a location so remote that it can only be reached by seaplane, were captured by wildlife photographer Roman Golubenko in Katmai National Park, Alaska.
