Biggs has a wish list

Wednesday November 4,2009

By John Twomey

FREED Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs is set to achieve another dying wish – to watch his favourite football team Arsenal.

The 80-year-old is hoping to see a match at the Emirates Stadium in north London before Christmas.

A well-wisher said: “He is still very weak but he has put on weight since he got out of prison.

“I’m sure the crowd would love it if he turned up in his motorised wheelchair.” Watching the Premier League side play was on Biggs’ list of five “things to do before I die”.

Top of the list was to get out of prison, which happened in August when he was released on compassionate grounds because of his health. He is wheelchair-bound and robbed of the power of speech by a series of strokes. He now lives at taxpayers’ expense in a care home in Barnet, north London.

Next on his dying wish list is to visit the scene of the 1963 Great Train Robbery, which earned him a 30-year jail sentence, to see his home neighbourhood of Brixton, south London, and to buy a pint of beer in a pub in Margate, Kent.
