Bob would give up his medals just like these ones

Wednesday November 11,2009

By Daily Express Reporter

A WAR hero aged 94 has pledged to return his medals after being refused the winter fuel allowance for missing the deadline by just one day.

Bob McGowan has waged a two-year war with Whitehall to get the £300 subsidy.

Civil servants turned down his bid in 2007 because he moved into his own home on September 24, a day after the Department of Work and Pension’s deadline.

But after two years battling bureaucrats the ex-soldier from Portsmouth has vowed to hand back five medals won during six years fighting in the British Army unless he gets the payment and an apology from Gordon Brown.

He said: “It seems I’ve got to bow down over one solitary day when I did six years overseas.”

The Royal British Legion yesterday called for more understanding from the Government over his case.

Roseanne Hanley, from the Welfare Department of the Hampshire branch, said: ‘We believe discretion should be shown with claims, especially from the very elderly.”
