POLICE GETTING NICER

Officers at Greater Manchester Police are being trained to be 'nicer'

Friday November 13,2009

By Daily Express Reporter

RUDE police officers are being sent on courses to teach them better manners.

The training has been introduced by Greater Manchester Police.

Det Supt Mike Freeman of the force’s professional standards department told Police Review magazine: “The biggest single cause of complaints against officers are about incivility.

“It is not about officers shouting and swearing at the public. It is about deportment – how that officer stands at a person’s door, for example. Officers are reminded how they should conduct and present themselves and the standards of professional behaviour.”

A quarter of complaints the force receives are about officers swearing or being sarcastic.

Officers at its three “rudest” divisions have been given the training since the beginning of this year.

It seems to work – between April and June, complaints fell 29 per cent compared with the same period in 2008.
