TOMKINS: Rising star

Wednesday November 18,2009

By Martin Richards

NEW Wigan boss Michael Maguire says the sky is the limit for his England stand-off Sam Tomkins after taking possession of the DW Stadium hotseat yesterday on a three-year contract.

Maguire, the former Melbourne Storm assistant coach, says Bradford scrum-half Paul Deacon is likely to be the only addition to the squad as he looks to the Warriors’ youngsters, led by Tomkins, 20, to do the business. “I’m excited about helping Sam out. He is definitely a talented kid,” said Maguire, who was the backs coach at the Storm and developed the careers of Australian stars Greg Inglis and Billy Slater.

“Sam needs experience but over time he can develop into a great of the rugby league game.”

Maguire, who succeeds Brian Noble, says Wigan do not need strengthening. “As you see it now is the way it is,” he said.

“I did a lot of homework so I was well aware of the organisation. It’s a young and exciting playing group.

“I’m looking forward to bringing a lot of my knowledge to those players and trying to improve every piece of the organisation.”

His first test will be against Noble, whose new club, Crusaders, visit on February 5.
