BLINDNESS CURE COULD SAVE SIGHT OF MILLIONS

BLINDNESS CURE: Treatment injects human stem cells

Saturday November 21,2009

By Jo Willey

MILLIONS could be saved from incurable blindness by an injection of human stem cells.

The new and controversial treatment for blindness was hailed last night as “the holy grail” of research into the problem of age-related macular degeneration.

AMD is Britain’s leading cause of blindness, affecting 500,000 people in this country alone. It usually strikes after the age of 50 and about 90 per cent of cases are untreatable

Initially it causes blurred or distorted vision but worsens over time and can cause total blindness.

Experts plan to start human trials of the treatment next year, using stem cells taken from spare embryos left over from IVF treatment. The procedure involves a single injection of cells directly into the retina.

Stem cells that are only a few days old can develop into any type of tissue in the body.

It is hoped they could repair damaged eyes.

But the operation will be controversial because many “pro-life” groups are opposed to using human embryos in any kind of medical research.

Scientists argue, however, that the benefits could revolutionise the treatment of many incurable conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.

Cathy Yelf, of the Macular Disease Society, said last night: “Obviously it is extremely interesting and we certainly welcome it very much indeed.

“It is in a way a holy grail because it would enable people to get the therapy that probably holds out most hope for people who have the disease.

"If people can regrow healthy retinal cells then that would be a wonderful thing.”

An American biotech company called Advanced Cell Technology is set to apply for a licence for the trials from the US authorities.

It is already hopeful that human trials using the same treatment for another form of eye disease, Stargardt’s macular degeneration, will begin by March.

This disease causes progressive damage to the central part of the retina, disrupting facial recognition and reading.

The company’s chief scientific officer, Dr Robert Lanza, said it plans to follow this trial with an application to the US Food and Drug Administration to treat AMD.

He said: “We hope to file a second application for age-related macular degeneration within the next few months. I think we’ve put together a pretty convincing case.”

AMD is caused when tissue at the back of the eye becomes clogged with natural waste products which block vital nutrients from passing into the retina.

This leads to the death of retinal cells and eventual blindness in one or both eyes. In “youthful” eyes, enzymes clear away this debris, but as the ageing process sets in, the body’s natural waste-disposal system becomes weak and unable to deal with its workload.

Some people are more at risk than others due to their age and family history, with women and smokers at greatest danger.

Currently there is no effective treatment for “dry” AMD, a less serious form of the disease.

Drugs like Avastin treat the more disabling and aggressive “wet” version but these usually do little more than stabilise the condition.

Barbara McLaughlan, of the Royal National Institute of Blind people, said: “RNIB very much welcomes research into treatments to prevent and possibly cure retinal diseases.

“It is exciting to see that we are getting to the stage when the use of stem cells can be trialled in humans

“A word of caution though. We do not know yet whether this approach will work in people with AMD.

“And if it does we do not know how long it will take for the treatment to become generally available to patients.”

Meanwhile, blind people are being helped to see again with the help of a “bionic” eye.

Three patients at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital are among just 32 in the world taking part in a trial of the revolutionary technology, which uses a camera mounted on a pair of glasses to send wireless signals direct to the brain.

"STEM CELL RESEARCH IS MURDERING CHILDREN?"

22.11.09, 12:04am

For heaven's sake, get a grip you religious numb nuts! God help us from Jeezus freaks! If you insist in believing in a God, then accept the fact that He or She gave us the intellect to save lives and restore the blind back to seeing.

If you lot had your way, all diabetics would be sentenced to death because "it's God's will" and we were wrong to use the insulin from the pancreas of animals in order to allow them to live normal lives.

Do you have eggs for breakfast loony? If so, they are chicken embryos. They are not cuddly feathered fluffy things, they are food! Although, I think that Obama was elected because of his ethnicity rather than as a man, at least he has broken away from this fundamentalist religious zealotry that the previous **** had and he has taken a more progressive and moderate stance on this situation and allowed stem cell research to go ahead.

To all you religious nutters out there, either:
You are all wrong, there is no God.
There is a God therefore, one religion is correct but which one? Logic demands that all religions cannot be the right one.

How many billions of innocent folk have been murdered in the cause of religion since man started believing in a God or Gods?

Purleeze - don't say that "it is written" "IT" is written by human beings to excercise power over the plebs - there simply is no scientific proof however, if you are in doubt as to the saviour of your soul, it is better to believe than not to believe as when you die, if there is no God, it does not matter any more. You cease to exist - end of story. If you were a believer, than you will be an honoured guest and sit at the right hand of The Almighty and smugly look down upon all the non-believers as they burn.

Religion is a fire escape.

You tell me to get a life, thanx but I all ready have one and it does not involve murdering babies to fullfill it.
Are you under the impression that your eyesight is more important than a babies whole life? is this what you believe?
I hope that you are never burdened with children because to you and other people like you, they are nothing more han spare parts for your existance.
Personally I find this whole stem-cell thing more than HORRIFICALLY GRUSOME.

EXPENSIVE CURES ARE NOT THE ONLY ANSWER TO AMD

21.11.09, 2:32pm

I have recovered from dry AMD after researching the topic. I am a retired optometrist and have advised others in the simple steps to be taken to prevent AMD occurring and have, in some instances helped sufferers to recover some of the sight loss. This requires supplementing the diet with meso-zeaxanthin. Only one supplement has this ingredient and is only available from opticians. It is called MacuShield. My web site explains more fully; www.hhmarsland.co.uk

STEM-CELL CANNIBALISM : YOU ARE WARNED.

21.11.09, 2:26pm

I would rather be BLIND than be a cannibal.
Why should tiny little babies be murdered just to provide sight for for the unworthy.
If anyone has no problem with killing babies for their own selfish means then you just stay away from my kids or you will need a lot more hospital time than you do now.
Be warned, Stem-cell treatment is CANNIBALISM, KILLING BABIES FOR YOUR MEDICINE IS SICK, EVIL AND OH SO SATANIC.
