WESTMINSTER was yesterday urged to give Holyrood powers to change drink-drive laws after allowing a lowering of the limit in Northern Ireland.

The Scottish Government is keen to reduce the drink-drive limit in line with Europe, but has been blocked by London despite the recommendation being made by the Calman Commission on the future of devolution.

MSPs say lives are being put in danger and want Scotland to follow Northern Ireland, where limits were lowered to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, from the present level of 80mg.

David Thompson, SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands, said: “How can a driver be considered safe to drive in Scotland, England or Wales, when in Northern Ireland they will be considered a danger?”
