DEBATE: IS CLIMATE CHANGE A CON TO RAISE TAXES

Story Image

Tuesday December 22,2009

THE scientific consensus that mankind has caused climate change was rocked yesterday as a leading academic called it a “load of hot air underpinned by fraud”.

Professor Ian Plimer condemned the climate change lobby as “climate comrades” keeping the “gravy train” going.

He said carbon dioxide has had no impact on temperature and that recent warming was part of the natural cycle of climate stretching over billions of years.

Prof Plimer told a London audience: “Climates always change. They always have and they always will. They are driven by a number of factors that are random and cyclical.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

IS CLIMATE CHANGE BEING USED AS AN EXCUSE TO CHARGE MORE TAX?

DO YOU AGREE WITH PROFESSOR PLIMER'S VIEWS ON THE ENVIRONMENT?

I AM STILL AMAZED

18.02.10, 2:00pm

It continues to amaze me with the number of people who actually believe that science has anything to do with this subject.

This is NOT science, but science fiction, if you believe in man-made global warming.

While I understand the difference between weather and climate, most people do not.

To believe that mankind could have any measureable affect on global conditions is pure arrogance and stupidity.
Also CO2 is the one gas which all life on earth depends. CO2 also is NOT a contributary factor of temperature increase, but is a result of increased temperatures.

Let us continue to clean up our environment, and to stop wasting our resources.
Do NOT confuse environmental issues (which we can control) with political issues!

Second to last paragraph should have been:

What's the worst that can happen if the scientists are right?

REBUTTAL TO PUGWASH

08.01.10, 12:17am

Couldn't resist taking the bait...but really, what was that all about?! Not once did you answer any of my points. Where did I say I was against technology? Where did I say that man was responsible for ALL the climate change? Where did I say I was against people disputing climate change?

As you point out, man has only been on this planet a miniscule amount of time, but look how we've altered it ecology-wise.You need to remove YOUR biased glasses and accept that man has had SOME effect on the planet.

If climate change is cyclical maybe the amount man is adds to it could make a difference. If your car was having mechanical problems you wouldn't go around thrashing it, would you? You'd nurse it along. OK maybe what we do won't make a difference, but who knows?

Whats the worst that can happen if the scientists are wrong? Jobs, technology, and industry are always evolving. People will learn new skills and get new jobs.

What the worst that can happen if the scientists are wrong? Well who knows, but people will suffer more than having to retrain for different jobs.

As stated before the issue about tax is about the most inane, nonsensical argument I've ever heard about any serious subject, I've ever heard in my life.

TO MR. EDUCATED KNOW IT ALL, 07.01.10.

07.01.10, 4:33pm

Get REAL pal and grow up. Man has been on this planet for the mere "wink of an eye" in an evolutionary time scale and utilsed it's resources accordingly.

The world is an enormously big place, ok through the wonders of technology you can talk to your mate in Sydney, but if you had to walk there or even sail it would take a great deal of time, a lot longer than flying over to see him.

Industry and commerce have given mankind, INCLUDING undeveloped countries, a life style unimagineable only 30/40 years ago. I love polar bears, tigers, frogs and creepy crawlies as much as David Attenborough, if not even more so, but without progress we would still be seeing them in black and white on a 15" TV.

Al Gore, David Shukman, George Monbiot et al with their "This week's Scare Story is" and "Renta a Mob" pals continuously bleating on about what they " THINK MIGHT" happen when you are drawing your pension or 6 feet under, are the demons in the story not industry.

You EDUCATED people can go and wear your hair shirts and abuse anyone who disagrees with your one sided opinions, whilst us simple UNEDUCATED folk enjoy our 'three score years and ten' on this beautiful / lovely diverse planet.

p.s. IDEA !! why not just get rid of all the people then the polar bears and tigers can roam the globe untroubled. Problem solved !

THIS ARTICLE GIVES THE UNEDUCATED A CHANCE TO MOAN

The very premise that global warming revolves around what happens in the UK is farcical and arrogant. The author should try another profession if he cannot report with anunbiased view.

Granted, this current spell of bad weather is pretty much over most of the northern hemisphere but the same argument holds true as far as 2 hemispheres are concerned. Ask the Aussies or Kiwis about their current droughts and record temperatures and suggest to them that there isn't climate change. NZ is having a water shortage.

If anybody wants to discuss climate change then they should know the basics of the ecosystem. Simple really. If you don't understand how it works then keep your mouth shut!

I don't know how much of this climate change is cyclical but I do know that the amount of trees destroyed, the population and industrial growth plus pollution MUST of had an affect on the planet. How much again is up for debate.

For those like the **** J Clarkson that says the world is big enough to look after itself...what happened with the ozone layer? Who caused the problem?

As a side point, what is wrong with looking for different forms of fuel? We wouldn't have a reliance on many problem oil rich countries and perhaps the world would end up a more peacefull place without western interference.

People who spout on about taxes are unbelievably ignorant. Governments will charge tax not matter what sort of fuel is used.

HEADS IN SAND

06.01.10, 7:16pm

The science of global warming has been understood for over a century.

Why anyone would think that there should be a global conspiracy that persuades people to waste less energy is beyond me.

The sad truth is that many people, and from the look of it the typical Daily Express reader, wish to continue with the developed and developing world using resources unsustainably. The climate is demonstrably changing and the reasons for this are well understood.

We are simply being asked to behave more responsibly so that the globe isn't irreversibly damaged within a couple of generations.

The ignorance that is knocked out as articles by this rag and others is almost criminal but I guess it serves a purpose of justifying a large section of our society's ill formed views.
