Mark McGhee considers shock move for Charlie Miller at Rangers

Saturday December 5,2009

By Scott Burns

ABERDEEN manager Mark McGhee is considering a shock move for former Rangers star Charlie Miller.

McGhee, who has formally made a pre-contract move for Motherwell star Jim O’Brien, has been alerted to the fact the 33-year-old midfielder has had his contract terminated with A-League side Brisbane Roar Š although he could face competition from SPL side Falkirk.

The Dons boss, who was keen on taking Miller to Motherwell before he went to Australia, admitted current trialists Ruaidhri Higgins and Peter Obiefule are in the driving seat for a contract

“I wasn’t aware of Charlie’s situation, McGhee admitted.

“I have to look at who we already have and ones we are considering.

“Is Obifule head of Higgins, these are things we are trying to work out.

“We have a time and now I am aware of Charlie’s situation I will consider him.

“But I wouldn’t say at this moment in time he is ahead of Obifule or Higgins.”

McGhee also confirmed Express Sport’s exclusive story from last month that he aims to sign Motherwell winger Jim O’Brien on a pre-contract.

On that situation, McGhee said: “We have approached Motherwell but we haven’t heard back from them.”

Aberdeen boss McGhee admitted he has been impressed with free Derry City star Higgins but wants to have another look at him.

McGhee admitted: “The likelihood is we will ask him to come back and I hope he is up for that because he has shown we should take a closer look at him.”

Obiefule has also been over for talks but McGhee has still to decide if he is going to firm things up with his club Lyn Oslo.

He admitted there are question marks over the defensive side of his game.

McGhee said: “Doing my due diligence, speaking to someone in Oslo yesterday, they confirmed he is a good player although he wasn’t sure he could tackle or was that great in the air.

“We have more work to do on that one but we have a bit of time because he is injured.”
