NOT even the good people of Rutherglen could have expected a round-the-clock video of folk going about their business to be of interest to anyone outside the town, let alone as interesting as outer space.

The web view of the town runs 365 days a year, and shows people popping in to the off-sales, the bookmakers as well as occasionally catching someone weaving home from a local pub.

Now, the video of life on the small Lanarkshire town’s Main Street has become a cult hit, and is fighting off opposition from views of the Brooklyn Bridge, London and Tokyo and astronauts in space to become the world’s most interesting webcam view.

Since the camera was sited in 2007 by an anonymous owner, more than 432,000 viewers have logged on. The scenes it shows have now been put on webcam network Earthcam’s shortlist.

Shopworker Lesley Tibbetts, 41, said: “The other day my shopping bag burst. All my eggs went everywhere.

“It was quite funny to think that people were watching that happen.”
