The 18-month-old dog flung herself into the path of a cougar poised to attack little Austin Forman.

The youngster said: “I saw my dog come charging at me. She cleared the lawn mower, which was amazing, and when she was in the air, the cougar jumped too and grabbed her. I didn’t even know it was there.”

The drama took place as Austin collected wood in the backyard of his home in Boston Bar, 150 miles outside of Vancouver, Canada.

He added: “I was really scared. At first, I didn’t know it was a cougar. I thought it was another dog. As soon as it went under the light, I saw it was a cougar. I knew I had to go inside.”

As the big cat gripped Angel’s throat in its jaws terrified Austin yelled to his mother Sherri: “A cougar is eating Angel.”

She called police and a Royal Canadian Mountie who was nearby was luckily on the scene in a minute.

The cougar had dragged Angel underneath the back porch but the Mountie shot it dead with its jaws still clamped round Angel’s head. The dog is now recovering from her wounds.

Austin said: “If my dog wasn’t there, I wouldn’t be here now. Thank goodness she protected me.” His mother added: “She’s our guardian angel.”
