BHOYS: NAKAMURA WILL STAY

Tuesday July 31,2007

By Andy McInnes

Celtic are trying to extend Shunsuke Nakamura's contract to tie him to the Parkhead club for another three years.

The move follows reports that the Japanese mid-fielder had an opt out clause in a previous deal allowing him to leave Parkhead this year.

But Bhoys bosses have always insisted that the international star has one year more to run on his current contract with them also holding an option for a further 12 months.

Now Celtic officials have held a meeting with one of Naka's agents, Roberto Takuda , aimed at prolonging the 28 year old's stay in Scotland.

The 28 year old who won't return to Parkhead until Friday after competing in the Asian Cup is however likely to take some time before deciding on his long term future.

The £2m buy from Italian club Reggina has always expressed a wish to return home to Japan before his young son reaches school age and has also declared that he would also like to try his luck in Spain before going back to his homeland.

While Celtic hope to delay both intentions manager Gordon Strachan continues to try and strengthen his squad for the new season maintaining an interest in Kilmarnock striker Steven Naismith and Paris St Germain full back Bernard Mendy without any officials bids being made.

That would be made much easier if misfits Thomas Gravesen and Jari Jarosik in particular could be off-loaded before the transfer deadline
