THE PRISON population should be slashed by a third with thousands of criminals given community punishments in an effort to stop them reoffending, a report by MPs said today.

Courts should send criminals to prison as a last resort, the cross party Justice Committee said, as ministers called for a radical shift in penal policy.

It also said Government prison building plans will cost £4.24 billion and are a “costly mistake”.

Reducing the total by a third would leave 56,000 inmates in jail and put 28,000 offenders on the streets.

Female prisoners, repeat low-level offenders, drug and alcohol addicts and prisoners with mental illnesses should be let out first, the report said.

yes, other things can be done first but it depends on what they are guilty of if murder then life should mean life not five years 10 years or 15 years for even after that time the dead person would not have come back! If that was the case then yes when the deseased came back to life then & only then should the person be free to walk our streets again. How many times have we heard of people killing more than once? Quite a few. I think they should have 3 strikes and then go into the army for five years. The 3 strikes could be for shoplifting, car theft,fruad, burglary very common but huge crimes that affect alot of people & all sex crimes be it against children or adults, prison!

The odd lash with a whip might not go down well with the PC crowd but the majority of us would applaud.
These thugs are making a laughing stock of our judiciary and the police and we the public deserve better sentencing than is given out for very serious crimes.

ALTERNTIVE TO PRISON

Well, this article links quite neatly with the one yesterday about taxing us to pay for picking up litter...

IF the alternative to a custodial sentence is
1 Unattractive exposure of the felon to his local public.
2 Some means of shaming him/her to the point that he/she no longer thinks it is "cool" to have an ASBO/community sentence/suspended sentence.
3 Hard graft that noone else wants to do

... then, fine, we, the law abiding majority, might think that we have got some sort of compensation and retribution..
There are so many jobs out there that could fit this bill, and reduce our taxation: -

Digging the ditches (with spades only) for broadband in the countryside. (Currently going to cost us all £10 a year on our phone bill).
Clearing out canals and rivers full of shopping trolleys. We'll supply waders, at cost.
Mending potholes in paths and roads.
Cleaning gum off the floors in shopping centres.

...Any more suggestions ?!?

"A millionaire businessman jailed for attacking a career criminal who kidnapped his family and held them at knife-point was freed by the Court of Appeal today.

Munir Hussain's 30-month sentence was reduced to a 'merciful' term of two years suspended by the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, and two other judges at the Court of Appeal in London."

This prison sentence, though, should have been reversed not suspended.

Criminals.....real criminals who attack, provoke , damage, invade, should be locked up for however long it takes !
