THE NEW CLIMATE CHANGE SCANDAL

Story Image

Glacier melt claims were 'speculation'

Monday January 18,2010

By Anil Dawar

FRESH doubts were cast over controversial global warming theories yesterday after a major climate change argument was discredited.

The International Panel on Climate Change was forced to admit its key claim that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The report was based on an interview with a little-known Indian scientist who has since said his views were “speculation” and not backed up by research.

It was also revealed that the IPCC’s controversial chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, described as “the world’s top climate scientist”, is a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics and no formal climate science qualifications.

Dr Pachauri was yesterday accused of a conflict of interest after it emerged he has a network of business interests that attract millions of pounds in funding thanks to IPCC policies. One of them, The Energy Research Institute, has a London office and is set to receive up to £10million from British taxpayers over the next five years in the form of grants from the Department for International Development.

Dr Pachauri denies any conflict of interest arising from his various roles.

Yesterday, critics accused the IPCC of boosting the man-made global warming theory to protect a multi-million pound industry.

Climate scientist Peter Taylor said: “I am not surprised by this news. A vast bureaucracy and industry has been built up around this theory. There is too much money in it for the IPCC to let it wither.”

Professor Julian Dowdeswell, a glacier specialist at Cambridge University, said: “The average glacier is 1,000ft thick so to melt one even at 15ft a year would take 60 years. That is a lot faster than anything we are seeing now so the idea of losing it all by 2035 is unrealistically high.”

The IPCC was set up by the UN to ensure world leaders had the best possible scientific advice on climate change. It issued the glacier warning in a benchmark report in 2007 that was allegedly based on the latest research into global warming.

The scientists behind the report now admit they relied on a news story published in the New Scientist journal in 1999. The article was based on a short telephone interview with scientist Syed Hasnain, then based in Delhi, who has since said his views were “speculation”.

The New Scientist report was picked up by the WWF and included in a 2005 paper.

It then became a key source for the IPCC which went further in suggesting the melting of the glaciers was “very likely”.

Yesterday, Professor Murari Lal who oversaw the chapter on glaciers in the IPCC report, said: “If Hasnain says officially that he never asserted this, or that it is a wrong presumption, then I will recommend that the assertion about Himalayan glaciers be removed from future IPCC assessments.”

Last year the Indian government issued its own scientific research rejecting the notion that glaciers were melting so rapidly.

Before the weakness in the IPCC’s research was exposed, Dr Pachauri dismissed the Indian government report as “voodoo science”.

The revelations are the latest crack to appear in the scientific consensus on climate change.

It follows the so-called climate-gate scandal in November last year when leaked emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit appeared to show scientists fiddling the figures to strengthen the case for man-made climate change.

The scandal prompted critics to suggest that many scientists had a vested interest in promoting climate change because it helped secure more funding for research.

Last month, the Daily Express published a dossier listing 100 reasons why global warming was part of a natural cycle and not man made.

That video really nails it. Please watch it. The Astronomy community has never fallen for man-made global warming. Why? Because temps on other planets in our solar system are rising. It's gonna take some hellacious taxation to stop that.

It's all about solar cycles. And clouds.

Did you know the climate modelers have no way of modeling clouds? Please watch the flick and find out all about it.

IN RESPONSE TO MR ABRAHAM CAMBRIDGE MSC MIEMA

In response to Mr Abraham Cambridge Msc MIEMA

It wasn’t a ‘key study’ but a key claim about the Himalayan glaciers melting by 2035. The Express Inferring that said claim was sensational. Do you not think it is a little irresponsible for a scientific body to make such an alarming statement based upon an interview and not backed by research?

You talk about the BBC reporting that the climate body admits a ‘mistake’ on Himalayan glaciers. They infer that it was data incorrectly inputted into the AR4 report (The wrong date). But doesn’t question how this mistake was made?

When you do some research you learn the aforementioned reasons for ‘the mistake’. The admission was that the information was not reviewed scientific literature but a media interview with a scientist. I don’t know about you but any educated person creating any report regardless of the number of pages doesn’t lapse over a source being incredible. Especially, concerning the alarming and quite serious nature of the claim said source was supporting.

And don’t you think it is irresponsible of the IPCC with all its resources to put Prof Murari Lal, who admits he is not a glaciologist, in charge of it’s glacier chapter.

As well, you question the veracity of “The Express” source without any factual information to back up your claim. Just declaring that Julian Dowdeswell, did not or may of not said what the “The Express” claims he did.

If you do some research that the statement comes from a report from the “The Sunday Times” and just something “The Express” contrived.

Further more, Rajendra K. Pachauri voodoo science quote is well documented and reported in a plethora of news sources. And no where in The Exspress’ article infer that Julian agrees with Pachauri’s statement.

You make various claims but as shown above you show little facts to support them. Worst yet you make accusations using the same method you are criticizing “The Express” for using: Unsupported inference and word manipulation. You even go as far as name calling. Just Sad.

HMMMMMMM........

20.01.10, 1:54am

When you consider how long the earth has been around, we haven't been keeping records on climate long enough to determine any pattern. We wouldn't know if this is a normal cycle for the earth or not.

That said, we still need to quit polluting the earth but real solutions never come from the government.

CLIMATE CHANGE COMPLAINT

20.01.10, 12:16am

To whom it all concerns,

All this media manipulation, likely to be to increase sales by creating a sensation is creating confusion that is preventing Jo public from realising that we need to clean up our act here on earth. Some are even confusing the need to recycle with uncertainties of the impacts of global warming. Oh dear. This has to stop.

The case in point is highlighted in yesterdays 'Express'. The headline article THE NEW CLIMATE CHANGE SCANDAL  dated 18/01/2010 blared at how the president of the IPCC has been found to be wrong about a 'key study' that reinforces theories on climate change. It inferred that the inclusion of its findings was a deliberate misleading of the public. It went on to accuse the IPCC that it is doing this to support a multi-million pound research industry. The BBC article UN climate body admits 'mistake' on Himalayan glaciers, released on the 19/01/2010 looked at this news differently. The BBC looked at how the figure in the now refuted Himalayian Glacier Study was incorrectly put into the AR4 and elucidates on the counter study that shows that it is impossible for such rapid deglaciation to occur. It (just about) does not infer that climate change is a myth but looks at the questionably of the IPCC processes that handle the vast compendiums of scientific research that come from climate change scientists from around the world.

Some information in 'The Express' is just plain wrong. It quotes a scientist as saying that glaciers are 'on average 1km'. The source was a Professor Julian Dowdeswell, a glacier specialist at Cambridge University. Did this man say this? And does he agree with the Express's view of climate change “voodoo science”? I think this Professor should be made aware that his words are being used to reinforce such an ignorant display of irresponsibility. The example from another source of refuting evidence to the glacier study, in this case by Georg Kaser from the University of Innsbruck in Austria was cited in the BBC article. His words repealing the original findings of the WWF for the New Scientist article were followed Kaser's statement ”it does not change the case for global warming being (ed) unequivocal.” I am sure Mr Dowdeswell thinks this aswell.
This is complete misconduct on part of the Express for manipulating the mindsets of fickle individuals creating a social negative consciousness, shrouded in doubt and gulability. They are accusing the IPCC of fixing data to get money. The Express are fixing the news to get money. Where does that leave the Jones'?

The Express have inadvertently stumbled across and fallen for, the same obstacle that has led to the comprehensive systems for peer review that when shown to occasionally make mistakes, reveals the mysterious world of nitpicking and banal bickering that goes on about a subject that we know enough about now to get on with fixing this world.

Yours Sincerely,
Mr Abraham Cambridge Msc MIEMA

FOR BOTTLETOP...

Peter Taylor - GCSE qualified climate scientist...

Err no.

Bury your head in the sand, or get real and look at this.

***************

OK, so it's a tabloid headline, but it encompasses, in general, in just one story, my feelings on the global-warming issue/coverage we've been suffering this last decade. Is global-warming happening? Most likely, yes. How is it being caused and how dangerous is it? I've no idea, but until the sane, calm and rational seize power from the tiresome, frothing-at-the-mouth, doomsday prophets that every generation of human beings has endured since we learnt to hunt and fish, I'm not listening! Especially when there's money in it for those willing to jump on the bandwagon and take control of the megaphone!
