Fundamentalist Islamic group Tablighi Jamaat is to be evicted from an 18-acre plot where it has operated an illegal mosque for three years.

There was outcry when the sect announced plans for a “super-mosque” on a scale never seen in the West. With room for 12,000 worshippers, the £80million mosque – backed by former London mayor Ken Livingstone – would have been four times the size of  Britain’s largest cathedral, the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool.

The sect is linked to shoe bomber Richard Reid, serving life for trying to blow up a transatlantic flight in 2001. Nearly 50,000 people signed a petition opposing the plan in  Stratford, east  London, including more than 3,000 local Muslims.
