VAUGHAN: Laying down the law

Thursday August 9,2007

By Colin Bateman

MICHAEL VAUGHAN has given his approval to gamesmanship in Test cricket, but not if it comes embellished with a four-letter word.

All ears will be on the stump mikes today at the Brit Oval when England resume their rancorous battle in the final match of the npower Test series with India leading 1-0.

ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle has warned captains Vaughan and Rahul Dravid to keep their players in check after the confrontations at Trent Bridge.

Vaughan said: “There were a few occasions in that last game when it got close to stepping over the line and our job is to make sure we don’t do that.

“We will still play intense cricket but I don’t want to see swearing on the pitch. A little gamesmanship and chirping can be good but when it comes to swearing at opposing players that is wrong.”

To England’s relief, star batsman Kevin Pietersen has shaken off a virus and will play in an unchanged side.
