ARSENE Wenger saw Nicklas ‘Barn Door’ Bendtner fire Arsenal into the Champions League quarter-finals and laid down a gauntlet to Manchester United and Chelsea.

Dane Bendtner recovered from his Burnley horror show at the weekend to score his first senior Gunners hat-trick in the five-goal demolition of Porto last night.

Arsenal are the first English team to secure their quarter-final spot but boss Wenger, above, wants United and Chelsea to see off AC Milan and Inter Milan, respectively, to join them.

The Gunners have lost twice to both United and Chelsea in the Premier League this season but, incredibly, Wenger would still choose to meet one of them in the last eight.

“I have a funny feeling it may be good for us to play an English team,” said Wenger.

“We have not done well against Chelsea and Manchester United this season and it would be good to get the opportunity to show that we can do it. If I say we don’t want to play an English team, then we’re in an inferior position. It’s a good opportunity if we get them to show we can do well. If I had a choice, I would say yes. We could not do worse than we did in the league, we could only do better.”

Bendtner missed three easy chances against Burnley at the weekend and was called ‘Barn Door’ in reference to failing to hit a barn door with a banjo, but responded in style and said: “The Burnley game did not play on my mind.

“Every time I play a game I put it behind me as soon as it’s finished. Sometimes it’s one of those days, today I put it right.

“I’m happy with my hat-trick, but we move on. This will give us a lot of confidence. We want to win the Champions League because it is something we haven’t done.”

Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Eboue also struck for Arsenal and Wenger added: “At the start of season no one expected us to be where we are at the moment. It’s important to continue to improve.”
