Prince Charles on a high wire 35 years ago is just one of the rare photos up for auction

HE has long walked a political tightrope over royal impartiality but there was a time when Prince Charles also negotiated a high wire as a dashing young action man.

A forgotten archive of pictures recalling those days when the heir to the throne was the world’s most eligible bachelor is up for sale at auction later this month.

The pictures show Prince Charles, then 26 and preparing to work as a Naval helicopter pilot on aircraft carrier HMS Hermes, going through commando training in late 1974 and early 1975 with the Royal Marines at Lympstone, Devon, during arduous tests that included exercises on a high wire.

Former Marine Graham Sharp, a Falklands veteran, compiled the collection, which also includes never-before-seen snaps of other royals, including Princess Diana, and Prince Philip with a bevy of beauties.

Mr Sharp, 49, from Yeovil, Somerset, hopes the collection he amassed after helping the Marines’ official photographer will fetch £1,000 at Charterhouse Auctioneers in Sherborne, Dorset, on March 26.
