Paul, 71, who kept the incident secret until now, said: “I ran for president because someone asked me to. I dropped out because some of the Magic Circle were extremely rude.

“They brought my family into it and I thought, ‘What are they on about? It’s a just place for card tricks’.”

Paul has been a member of the Inner Magic Circle since he was invited to join in the early Eighties and members planted a circle of roses in his garden on the day he married Debbie McGee 21 years ago.

The presidential race was sparked last September by the death of the then president Ali Bongo.

Circle president Jack Delvin said: “One or two people thought Paul would be a wonderful president but it became clear more didn’t.”

Paul added: “The place is for amateur magicians. It’s a very interesting place if you’re not a magician but it’s not my scene.”
