Samantha Cameron expecting a baby

SHE has been hailed as the Conservatives’ “secret weapon” but now Samantha Cameron has the added glow of an expectant mother.

Just days after Tory leader David Cameron, 43, said his wife would be “out there” on the campaign trail, the pair revealed SamCam was three months pregnant with their fourth child.

The couple are said to be “completely thrilled”. Mrs Cameron, 38, is due to give birth in September just weeks before her husband’s 44th birthday. She faces a very public pregnancy after pledging to support her husband in any way she can over the next two months.

The couple have a son, Arthur, four, and daughter Nancy, six. Another son, Ivan, who had cerebral palsy and epilepsy, died last year aged six.

It could be the third time a baby has been born to a serving Prime Minister if Mr Cameron wins this year’s general election.

The first child born during a premiership was in July 1849. He was Francis, the third child of Lord John Russell.

Tony Blair’s wife Cherie gave birth to Leo in 2000, aged 45, three years after her husband became Prime Minister. They have two other sons, Euan and Nicky and a daughter Kathryn.

The birth of Leo attracted huge media attention and catapulted his name 42 places higher in the league table for baby names.

Sarah Brown gave birth to James Fraser in 2006 just before her husband Gordon succeeded Blair as Prime Minister.

They lost a daughter, Jennifer, just 10 days after she was born.

The news will help promote Mr Cameron’s well-publicised views on the importance of family values.

Female voters, and in particular mothers, have been touted as wielding the power this year and Mrs Cameron has already won over admirers for her high street fashion sense.

She was credited with giving the Tories a bounce in the polls after her first public TV interview, with Trevor McDonald, last Sunday. And even a series of revealing modelling photographs, which show off Mrs Cameron’s figure, have not damaged her image. Mr Cameron had dropped several hints of wanting to add to his family during an interview with Daily Express columnist Alan Titchmarsh.

A radiant Mrs Cameron, the daughter of a baronet, was spotted doing the school run in Notting Hill yesterday morning, looking relaxed in black jacket, baggy maroon top, black trousers and flat pumps.

She would have to juggle looking after the new baby with being Prime Minister’s wife and her job as creative director of upmarket stationers Smythson if the Tories win. The prime minister’s official spokesman said Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah were “very pleased” to hear the news. He added: “They will be sending a message of best wishes to them.”

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and his wife Miriam Gonzalez Durantez sent a message of congratulations.

Mr Clegg said: “I am delighted for them both.”

Returning home last night, Mrs Cameron said she was “very, very delighted as you can imagine”.

Asked if she was suffering morning sickness, she replied: “Yes.”
