LOOKING every inch a fella in a masculine grey suit, Chastity Bono – now called Chaz – proudly paced the red carpet this weekend with his girlfriend Jennifer Elia.

For singer Cher’s daughter Chastity is rapidly getting used to his new role since a sex change operation changed her into a chap.

One onlooker at the 21st GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, promoting lesbian, gays and bisexuals working in the arts, said: “I didn’t have a clue he used to be Cher’s daughter – they look nothing alike. I didn’t know who he was.”

Activist Chaz, 41, began the surgical process to change gender in March last year, and has since ditched Chastity’s feminine blonde locks and floral dresses.

He has previously called it the “best decision” of his life, adding: “I’ve struggled a lot getting here. If by being public other people can see this and not have to struggle as much as I did, then I’m happy to do that.”

Last autumn he said in a TV interview: “Gender is between your ears, not between your legs. I’ve felt male as far back as I can remember. As a child it was really clear. I felt like a boy.”

Chaz – his father is Cher’s late ex-husband Sony Bono – came out as a lesbian at 18 when he was at New York University.

While Sonny was quite accepting, Chaz has said Cher “went ballistic”.

Two years later Cher, 64, is reported to have thrown her daughter out of the house after Chastity told her she was in love with Jennifer. But now mother and daughter are reconciled.
