Police go on patrol in campervan

FORGET the classic cops-and-robbers car chase with screaming tyres and blaring sirens.

Instead of high-revving cars, police in the West Midlands are more likely to find themselves behind the wheel of a camper van with a top speed of just 80mph when they respond to calls.

A source said officers were the butt of jokes every time the £17,000 Peugeot Elddis camper was used instead of a patrol car.

He said: “People just laugh at them. It’s supposed to be for community events and shows. No one likes driving it.”

West Midlands Police said the vehicle was a deterrent against anti-social behaviour and was not being used for emergencies.
