REIGNING champions Team Bath took the Superleague Grand Final at the weekend, after a bitter battle against Hertfordshire Mavericks.

Odds-on favourites Team Bath won the Co-operative Netball Superleague Grand Final for the fourth time in five seasons on Saturday, but the match was not the easy win the team have come to expect in previous showdowns.

Bath fell behind early on and were noticeably off pace, with challengers Mavericks dominating for the majority of the game.

But a determined show from the champions - provided by a goal from Team Bath captain Pamela Cookey - put them back in the lead, giving them a boost to claw their way back and secure the trophy once again.

With a final score of 51-44, Cookey said she was delighted with the new silverware.

"Whoop whoop!" she laughed, "Yay, we came out on top. So proud of the girls, so pleased, awesome."

She went on: "Considering where we started at the start of the season and we just built it and built it and this is just like, er the end thing at the end of the season and we've won... I can't speak."

Cookey was later handed another prize, being named Player of the Year for the third time in a row.

Mavericks' captain Louisa Brownfield praised the winners, but admitted the loss was "gutting" for the team.

"Gutting! That's the easy way to put it," she said.

"After the first quarter I thought we were in with a really good shot and to be fair we were for most of the game, but our performance was too inconsistent to pull ahead and stay ahead.

"Fair play to them and well done Bath."
